01 / The problem
The problem
Importers, exporters and customs agents need to know which HS code applies to a product, and then the tariff rate, documents, conditions and duty benefits for that code. That information was spread across tariff schedules and separate notices, and it changes every fiscal year, so finding the full picture for one product was slow.
02 / My role
My role
Team Lead. I led the development team, designed the backend and data model, and built the search and the data-entry side used by customs staff.
03 / The solution
The solution
A public Import Export Hub on the Bangladesh Customs & VAT site. Anyone can search imports or exports by HS code or product description, with an advanced search for narrowing results. Each HS code brings together its tariff rate, general and product-specific documents, compliances and conditions, and duty and tax benefits. An approximate duty calculator estimates the payable duty for a code. An authorised section lets customs staff maintain the data. Entry is flexible, so tariffs, documents and conditions can be updated for each fiscal year without code changes. Queries and indexes are tuned so searches across the full tariff stay fast.
04 / The result
The result
One public place to look up HS code information, used in national customs operations. Customs staff keep tariff and document data up to date themselves each fiscal year.
